I've been doing fmq on a quilt for a Christmas gift and realized yesterday, that I still needed to work on my dh rag quilt... I can only work on it when he and the kids are gone... So, I finished cutting all the squares, and started getting my machine ready for regular sewing. I went to raise the feed dogs, and realized I had never lowered them!!!! I have completed about half of the quilting on this lap quilt without lowering them, lol! Maybe it will be easier today... just made sure they were lowered.

Leah Day says she never lowers her feed dogs. Says she gets a better stitch that way. She uses the Super Slider so it covers the feet. It seems I've read posts from other quilters here who don't lower the feed dogs.

I forgot and it made for a nice quilt!

I cover my feed dogs with the slider thingy and set the stitch length to 0 and it seems to work for me. I don't use a fancy machine.

So funny! When reading your post I realized that I am doing the same thing on my FMQ!!! Now, do I lower the feed dogs or just keep going???? This is just my second time with FMQ and I am afraid to change midstream.

Like they say - "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

If you're happy with what you've been doing, keep doing it. Or give the other a try and see which you prefer. I don't think it really matters as long as you're pleased with the results.

I've done that several times and the quilting has come out fine. My biggest "Duh" is when I do lower the feed dogs for FMQ and then forget to raise them for regular sewing and can't figure out why the fabric won't move!
