I also dye a lot of my own fabrics and use Kona cotton but I have been buying it from Dharma trading where I also buy my Procion dyes and other supplies like the Synthrapol. I have a lot of different colors and usually dye gradations of 6 or 8 of each color when I do it. I will have to get the black as I have found that that is a hard color to find sometimes and I seem to use a lot of black in my projects.I bought a book on ebay and that is how I started. I have never tried snow dyeing but it looks interesting. We get lots of snow here usually so I might try that this winter. I have tried sun printing and my 6 year old grandson loved helping with it and seeing the results of the items he put on the fabric.

I have started to get interested in dyeing...my last attempt was the 70's - I tie-dyed all my bed linen in orange and yellow...my mother was pretty horrified but it looked great to me.

I have no chance of ever snow-dyeing!...but will have to investigate the best dyes to buy here in Aus.

i'm at work so can't snap a pic of my latest batch of hand-dyed fat quarters...but I LOVE TO DYE MY OWN FABRICS! every quilt i make has at least a little piece of hand-dyed fabrics...in fact i just yesturday received a new order with some new colors. i can't wait to get a couple other things done and out of the way so i can go dye some new fabrics!
I purchase all of my supplies from Dharma Trading Company. shipping is reasonable and fast, customer service is good; selection is great! and one of my favorite (dyeing recipe books) recommends the same products i use, so for me that was a cool perk... i can follow a color - recipe and be pretty confident i will get the results i expect...although you never know for sure, part of the fun is the surprising outcomes! i also enjoy (resist-dyeing) where i put objects (usually fall leaves) on a piece of black fabric, spritz with a bleach water mixture and watch the magic happen...then you have to (stop the bleach) just rinsing is not enough you have to use something to stop the bleach...like peroxide (there are products you can buy for this) when the leaves are removed you have (shadows)then can applique fabric leaves off-set so they look like they are floating above the fabric. you can even dye commercial printed fabrics, i've taken some black& whites and (over-dyed) them with hot pink, and lime green. both really turned out great! just have to remember if you are not using PFD FABRICS (prepared for dyeing) you have to prewash your fabrics to remove any sizing/additives that may keep the dye from working.

Did you learn that you can make dye from avocados? The skin makes pink and the pits a rusty brown? Holy guacamole! I had never heard this before. What kind of dye are you using? I have always used procion but I love learning about other methods.

I've just attended a 1-day dyeing workshop and came away with 10 fat quarters in colours graduated from rasberry red to marine blue using Procion Dyes. I love them. The idea of doing a graduated batch of the same colour sounds great.
