I haven't had a quilt that needed squaring since I learned to square each block as I go, but when I had to do one, I used my 6X24 ruler with a 12 1/2 square lined up with it. I'm doing a Log Cabin type now and squaring each round, so it should be okay, too.

I measure across the middle of the quilt, then measure the top and then measure across the bottom. Lay the quilt on top of my cutting mat, finding the middle and then trim off the excess using the "L" square ruler, evenly from both edges on the left and the right.

I can see how this might be necessary if you fmq on your domestic machine. But as a LAQ it is my goal to keep the quilt square as I am stitching it. I have never felt the need to square any of my quilts after quilting because they looked square when laid out flat. Perhaps I need to measure a few and see how exact they are.
