I use one large square and two small squares. I don't need a special ruler and there is no waste.
The amount of waste is negligible for the accuracy and speed with which these geese go together. The ONLY limitation is that there are only 4 sizes. I use the large square 2 small square method for other sizes. I don't mind having extra rulers. I make it a point to use them on a regular basis. You still get waste from this as well trimming the back corners.

The rulers don't work for you if you are using up smaller scraps. There are some other methods of doing multiple flying geese using a regular square ruler as well. This is that one that makes 8 geese at once. Just not as slick as EB's ruler. I've miscut on that 8 geese one a few times.
