PHOOEY! Its off to Mardens for me! They have a HUGE fabric dept in the one near me in Ellsworth, ME.
I also shop at my LQS. She gives a 15% discount to anyone who tells her that they belong to a quilt guild and name the guild. If you are ever in Bar Harbor, ME, she is right across from the post office.
The rest of my fabrics come from online sources.
The only thing that Walmart is good for, in my opinion, is their low prescription prices, books and magazines and occcasionally some clothes.

We have a Walmart in Tallahassee, Fl that has converted their fabric from by the bolt cut to pre-cut selections. The selection is very limited and the pieces are fat quarters, 1 yard (prints) and 2 yard solids. The prices are higher. Hope this is not what they consider something that we should be excited about. I buy a lot of Walmart cottons in 5 to 8 yard lengths for backings.

Thank you for your recent inquiry regarding the fabric department in your local store. As with any merchandise decision that we make, we have based our decision to reduce the stitching and fabric departments on customer demand, which does not appear to be as high today for a full stitching and fabric offering in some markets as it may have been at Walmart in the past.

In keeping with our emphasis on being a store of the community, Walmart is converting the fabrics and crafts department in some stores to a newly expanded assortment of merchandise that focuses on life's celebrations. We are thrilled to offer our customers this exciting new crafts and celebrations center that makes available craft and party planning needs along with information on current trends and new ideas in the area of life's celebrations, such as holidays, weddings and birthdays.

In those stores where the new crafts and celebrations center is placed, merchandise commonly referred to as 'notions' will be included in the product offerings - such as sewing machines, yarn, needles, thread, etc. As a part of this conversion, most of our new and remodeled stores that opened earlier this year, as well as a small number of existing stores, will feature the new crafts and celebrations center in place of bolt fabrics. Walmart will continue to carry cut fabric in most of our stores. Due to the continued evaluation of our stores, we are unable to share a list of existing stores scheduled to receive the new crafts and celebrations center at this time.

    Sincerely,
    Walmart Customer Care
They sent me that very same e-mail twice!!! I don't think anyone is listening to us!!!

I, too, received the "generic" reply from WalMart... well, it does tell us a few things..... some of us are writing and we are getting the same answer.... not a response to personal comments in our emails to them...
I told them that I have never seen anyone in their "celebration" aisles, and that is in several stores located in my area. They may have made a MAJOR blunder in their remodeling efforts. Oh, well, their loss is another stores gain.

The local Walmart here replaced the fabric department with crappy Chinese made plastic toys !!! I want to kick something every time I have to pass there.

I am in agreement with you ClairVoyant....am tired of the little guy having to compete with the big box stores..and the discounts. Give the local guys a chance.
