Thanks so much for the advice and pictures. I don't know where my brain was when I mentioned adding eight plain blocks to the eight pieced blocks! I think I'll only only use at most six pieced blocks and six plain blocks. (Lap-size quilt) I'm excited to give this a try.

Made a single Irish Chain in a Day using the Eleanor Burns book. I used my 4D Professional embroidery software to scan and create a shamrock outline embroidery design from the book. Four shamrocks would fit in each plain block. I did SITD on the pieced blocks where I could. Hooped each plain block and positioned one shamrock in each corner -- had to hoop each plain block 4 times. Did not use stabilizer for the quilting.

I actually quilted a snowman quilt - but all three layers at once. Took a while but I was very pleased with the results. I've also done it with a black quilt. I'll put up pics. Poly batting.

and
this one. Both of these quilts took very long to quilt, but I am quite pleased with the results:

For both of them I had to make sure they were supported. The first one I did on my little Janome 350E and the second one Janome 12000.

Here is a site that might help you-I noticed it on quilt for a day that someone had asked a question on how to quilt with their embroidery machine http://www.myembroideryhaven.com/howto.html

Love love the snowman! Wonder if you would share where you got that design? I'm deciding on a theme...winter winds will be blowing here sooner than I'd like. Your blk/white quilt is awesome too!

I love the fact that once you get an account, you can redownload any at any time....and they will tell you if you've already bought that design!

Quilt first or SITD first?
I always use my embroidery machine to quilt a quilt. It's not edge to edge but I'll choose a design that fits the square then I normally do a stitch in the ditch or I'll choose an embroidery design to fit on another pieced part of the quilt. It's your quilt and you can do what you like.
