I have used Maderia a lot and have never had a probem with it breaking. I have used it for several years and lots of embroidering on everything from demin to fine t-shirts, and never a problem. Sorry you are having a bad time. MaYbe it is dried out. Put it i nthe freezer for 2 hours to see it that helps.

I use Floriani, RA and Sulky and Prensia and Jenny Haskins; I don't have any problems with any of them. The RA is a great deal thru Sears website; it's only 3.95 spool, which is almost 1/2 price most LQS.

I use Madera or Sulky thread for embroidery. I avoid Coats and Clark. I don't like the lint that it makes or that it "strips" away from the core thread and has clumps of thread wrapped around the center thread.

I use Robison Anton, Sulky and Isacord of which I have the most spools. I have had great results with all brands of thread actually with both of my embroidery machines. I do know some machines can be 'picky' about certain brands or the way threads are wound, sometimes it just take a little testing and patience. My first Designer 1 didn't like any poly embroidery threads at all so I used only rayon. So don't be surprised if some threads don't perform perfectly. Some people buy just a few spools of new brands just in case their machine has a 'preference'. HTH
