I use one of those plastic storage tubs, just put even a torch under it and your fabric on top, cost zero, as most of us have a storage bin.

Put a trouble light in the bottom of your top loading washer and a hunk of plexiglass over the top, Nice light box. or use a square or oblong crate with a light under it and plexiglass over the top. A glass cake pan will work too.Look around the house and you will find something that will work.

I made my own light box using a sheet of clear glass on a box with a light in side the box. But you can use an old drawer with a low voltage light bulb under the glass. It could cost just a few dollars to make.

I bought an old lightbox to watch slides on in a thriftshop, replaced the top with a piece of plexiglass.
But when the pattern is not to big ( and usually they aren't)
I copie it with saralpaper onto the quiltfabric.......
