I'd like to buy different colors of embroidery thread. Would a set be the best way to go? I'd like to use it for embroidery and also applique. I'd like to get as many different colors for under $50.

Friends have bought at these places (mostly at shows) over the last few years. I've never heard any complaints, and they've all done many pieces.

My friend bought the entire color collection from Marathon one year at Houston. They were a pleasure to deal with.

I don't do any embroidery so I can't give you any personal experience on the embroidery thread. I have bought silk ribbon from threadart.com.

Also, some sellers on eBay - if you're looking for the most bang for your buck (or pound):

I've bought threads/ribbons and other items from the above sellers. There are many other sellers on ebay, some located overseas.

Of course, the mainstream names will be more expensive.

I really think that biting the bullet & purchasing an entire set was the best thing I did. You never will purchase those taupes and greys etc. that add so much shading to your embroideries. I purchased the entire ARC collection, but they no longer make their own thread. Now I think I would go with marathon.

I love metro thread. I bought a bundle of thread from them for under $100 and I want to say something like 80 spools. Very good quality too. I like it!
