Exactly What is a Quilt?

Oh your photo didn't show up earlier when I was replying, how beautiful is that.
Yes, there is a whole area of quilting referred to as Art Quilts and that is what you do...and they can be huge or they can be tiny. Enjoy your art quilting.

1. a coverlet for a bed, made of two layers of fabric with some soft substance, as wool or down, between them and stitched in patterns or tufted through all thicknesses in order to prevent the filling from shifting.
2. anything quilted or resembling a quilt.
3. a bedspread or counterpane, especially a thick one.
4. Obsolete . a mattress.
–verb (used with object)
5. to stitch together (two pieces of cloth and a soft interlining), usually in an ornamental pattern.
6. to sew up between pieces of material.
7. to pad or line with material.
–verb (used without object)
8. to make quilts or quilted work.
I guess #2 could be stretched to include your guild project, but I think I'd be more inclined to qualify it as well with a descriptive adjective. Rather than just "quilt", I'd maybe call it a "hanging quilt".

It's beautiful!
To me, a "quilt" as in the first definition given above indicates...that it is usually a covering related to a bed.
We have quilted purses, potholders, and such, but no one I that I know of calls them "quilts". They call them what they are. Depending on the size of your quilt, I'd call it a wallhanging, or as someone suggested, a "work of art" that you quilted.
But that's just me. I've seen people advertise on ebay a "quilt" and then I look closely and it's about 12-15" square. (The pics were taken in such a way it was hard to tell the size by the picture alone--had to read carefully to see the size)
I am not sure the issue will ever be resolved once and for all. ;)
