Thanks for letting us know. I am not impressed with magazine. I got the free issue and then didn't subscribe.

When I traveled through Iowa a couple of years ago, I stopped at the F & P quilt store. I thought the store was very small, I think I expected it to be more. The ladies working there were very nice and when I expressed a desire to make a wallhanging in the shop they printed me a copy of the pattern, no charge, and I bought the fabric needed. But, I no longer subscribe to the magazine for several reasons. As a side note, a package arrived and they were so excited--it was their order from Connecting Threads. :)

I have ordered once from Fons and Porter and will never order from them again (though I do receive their magazine, it was a gift subscription). This past May I ordered a block of the month kit from them. It was supposed to ship out by June and was seasonal (the block would be for the coming month). August came and went and I hadn't seen the first one. I called and got some story about the fabrics not being available but that it had just shipped out. I received the first one, but nothing the next month. I called in October after not receiving another block and I don't remember what their excuse was then but I told them to cancel my order. The customer service person said she had cancelled my order but when I asked for a confirmation email of this she said she couldn't send one. So what shows up in the mail in November? You guessed it, the second block. I had been charged for it and I was ticked. I called once again, asked again for the order to be cancelled. Was again told that it had been but they couldn't send me confirmation of it. I threw a little fit about that but it did no good. I haven't seen another BOM in the mail though. Not sure what I'll do with the two I have.

Regarding your question though, about quilt kits, I do think the pattern should come with the kit. I see this same thing from Connecting Threads and The Fat Quarter Shop. Selling kits but saying you'll have to purchase the magazine or book separately. I think if you're going to put a kit together for a pattern, the pattern should be printed off on it's own and come with the kit.

I already had forgotten about that but it was just last week! I was put off by that too and my husband couldn't believe a company was still doing that. He said he hasn't seen that in years. (I sent mine back as well. I'd rather read about quilting than watch a show.)

As a new quiter, this is a great thing to know. Talk about a rip-off. I am sure there are a lot of other reputable places to purchase from, right??

    Thanks for the info.

Sounds like a low, down dirty trick to me! A kit should include directions

Wow thanks for the warning. Too bad they care so little about customer service, not many businesses can survive without it.

Wow, I think that is horrible, too! I think a kit should have the INSTRUCTIONS, lol!

While I agree that making you pay for their error was wrong, and it should certainly be well labeled if the instructions aren't included, I actually disagree with you. Here's my take:

I buy a lot of magazines off the rack as impulse buys. I love coming home with a new magazine to peruse. On several occaisions I have then ordered the kit for a project seen in the magazine. If I already have the magazine, why should I pay more for a kit that also includes the instructions? That would be redundant, and a waste of money. Selling the instructions, or magazine, separately, allows people who buy the magazine first to not have to pay to buy the magazine again if they don't want to.

The situation certainly could be handled differently by F&P, by lowering their prices, which seems to be a different compaint, or by charging more for the kit and including the magazine, but again, then someone like me would pay more, so I prefer buying the kit sans magazine.

Obviously I'm in the minority, and I actually don't care for F&P for other reasons, but I doubt I'm alone.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience, though. I would be ticked if I was sold a kit that there weren't any instructions available for, and I wasn't told this until after I'd paid for and received the kit.
