Fabric Returning to Wal-Mart : Report from Wall Street.
#231
Went to one of two Walmarts in town that still carries fabric on the bolt and their selection is very low. I was told that they are going to do away with the fabric department all together in that store and the other one as well. Too bad, that's the only reason I shop there and when I do I usually buy other things. I guess they'll be losing me as a customer.

My walmart still has fabric, the dept is smaller, but, they do have fabric. The other dept mentioned to take over fabric is located in another area of the store. So looks like our fabric dept will remain. Have to watch and see

That's good to hear! When our WM was remodelling they were going to take out the FD but our small town folks called them on it. Not everyone can afford the $10/yd. fab. from the LQS or drive the 1.25 hr. for less expensive fab. Our WM kept the FD and they are stuffed, not enough space to get it all displayed, yet there is different merch out weekly. Whenever I shop there i have to walk through and see what's new. They usually have customers, empty bolts on the cart, and knowing a couple of them personally, "they are kept quite busy."
I have been in several stores that took their FD out, and the common response is, "so many people miss it."

My Walmart lately has many partial bolts on the side table at reduced prices. When I asked about it, they said they were getting stuff in from other stores and didn't have room on the walls for it. They also said they wouldn't know until July if the department would stay open or not at this store. I'll be taking advantage of the reduced prices to stash-build as much as I can afford to do so.

Unless you have a document issued by Wal Mart with a "name" on it, the fabric departments are a thing of the past. I continue to check all of the Walmarts in my area and there is no indication at all that fabric is coming back. The entire craft area now is less than 20 feet long and includes quilting, knitting, crochet, scrapbooking and beading. In other words, it's not worth 2 minutes to walk down the aisle.

This is good news. Hopefully, they'll expand the notions, yarn and patterns as well.
Right now, the Walmarts in a 20-mile radius of where I live only have one lousy aisle for all of the items that used to be in the craft department, which means that most of the items disappeared.
I didn't buy their fabric, but bought a lot of notions and yarn.
