Normally when I make a quilt they run about 44" wide and in the past this wasn't an issue, however I am finding that more and more, the quilt fabric companies have shrunk the width of the fabric and now I am having to adjust my borders constantly.

Does anyone know of companies that have not changed width sizes? I know I can do the joining of 2 pieces, but I so dislike having seams down the middle of my quilts.

To totally avoid the seams, the only way would be to buy the extra width backing fabric. Most people I think don't mind the joins, some even make three panels in the back so there would not be one central seam but one either side of the centre. Lots of people use patches/blocks too.

I'm no help about finding "regular" size fabric, but you might want to consider fleece. I think it's 50-52 inches wide and is really nice to quilt with.

You could either buy wide fabrics, or be creative and add something else to the back. I rarely make a back of just one fabric anymore. I love finding ways to make it more interesting. Here's a post I started a couple of years ago.

Use John Flynn method. Of seaming. Diagonal on the back. It saves a lot of fabric.

Ranny, I often look through the apparel section of Joann's at cotton shirting or other clothing fabric. Most apparel fabric is around 56 - 58 inches wide. There's not as many color/pattern choices, but it's a tradeoff. And, of course, some people use sheets.

I love seeing the back sides of the different quilts. I've seen the scrap material used as the back side and looks like a reverse quilt to me. Some look like crazy quilts. Love it!
