So that is what I did, I folded fabric from 1 yard to 5 yards and it looks nice.
Added bonus: no board to take up additional space. (Hey - we all cram here, 'fess up...)

I got mine out of thr recycle bin at work, it is plastic that is shaped like cardboard. I just started turning the spare room to a sewing room so I did it cheap...I just had to cut it down.

Marie Osmond has some plastic mini bolt holders for fat quarters. You can buy them at Quilters Warehouse.

I did the same thing because with the size of my stash I was afraid the boards would get too expensive. One extra thing I did: I cut a package of index cards in half, then I measured the fabric and wrote down the yardage and then folded the fabric and stapled the half index card to the front. No more guessing if there is enough yardage for a project. Index cards are a bit sturdier so they don't wrinkle when moving the fabric around.

I found acid free, cardboard supports used by collectors for storing comic books work well. I wrap my fabric pieces that are larger than 1/4 yd. and smaller than 2+ yds. My larger pieces used for backings go into a storage tub. You can get them at comic book stores and they are very reasonably priced. Acid free will not stain your fabrics over time.

I bought what they call "chip board" at my local craft store. 95 cents a board. Check out other sites on this quilting board many give demenison for cutting the board. You can buy already made ones ,but that is expensive.I wish I could remember the lady on here that helped me with that same question . I have been indebted to her. Happy quilting

Most quilt shops are more than glad to give you the empty cardboard bolts. I learned from a friend to cut them in half and they make GREAT storage for 1/2 - 2 yard pieces. I use the whole cardboard for bigger yardage.

cathylynn - what are these boards made of? I found some on line, but don't have a description & since they are white, pic is not too great.

    Thanks
