Okay, here I am showing my ignorance. I didn't know you should match thread and needle and I use Coats and CLark al purpose thread. What SHOULD I be doing? Why use polyester thread with cotton material? How do you match the thread and needle to know what size needle goes with what wt. thread? I just use an 11 needle usually and use it until it breaks, which is often enough that I don't fear the needle being dull. The thread, however, I don't even pay attn to the weight. Someone school me please! Also, I have never heard of Auriful thread. I only have JoAnns as my option for buying things around here, do they sell it there? I haven't seen it but then again, I didn't know to look. OMG This board is so informative, what would I do without all of you? This is what I get for trying to teach myself quilting, LOL

If your thread is fraying, you might try changing needles. Sometimes needle eyes have a slight barb in them. The other thing I do is retread my machine, and double check my top and bottom tension. I use several different threads from Superior Threads and Aurifil. I love all the Trilobal Poly threads from Superior. I do not use the thread from connecting threads anymore due to the lint problems they create in my machines.

My lost message was about 60 wt YLI. Bought some at a show. $5 for a thousand yards or meters, not sure. I do miniatures and the thread just disappears. It is the only cotton 60 wt thread I have found. The first time I wound a bobbin, I thought it would never be full. I was afraid the whole spool was on that one bobbin. I sewed all week without winding another. Order it from YLI.com but call order in. The Internet shipping price is based on money spent, not actual shipping cost.

Thanks to all of you. I have a brother 1500 on a handi quilter frame. I just got the quilters cruise control for it and it has helped so much but I'm having this fraying thing going on/ I will check everything and see if that helps.
