While they're more expensive than either chalk or soap, I LOVE ceramic pencils! You get a nice, clean line, and they come in various colors.

I love the ceramic mechanical pencils also. But I have only used the white.

Crayons Ultra Clean crayons. I swear by them. They wash out even more easily than the markers. I have a 24 pack & can pick white, yellow, pink or whatever I can best see. Plus, the raised texture from the crayon & shininess of them seems to offer extra help with visibility. Only downside is you need a crayon sharpener & they do not ever give you a super fine line. They're good to within 1/16" and wash out with plain water.

I have this same question! I'm using the clover chalk wheel pen thingie now... It's okay...but I have a two year old so I should definitely try those clean crayons next. Two birds one stone and all.

I love the chubby crayons. And they now come a little slimmer than the original

Soap! Easily available at all hours and days of the week and washes out completely.

Here is what I use on light OR dark fabrics. It can be seen with light to the side - not shining directly down on the quilt -- and can be washed out. I've used them for years!!

I have used the blue tailors square chalks for years , not sure why I bought them. The white pencil arkers never worked well for me.

Speaking as a former preschool teacher, once you share the crayons with the 2 year old, they will never be fit for quilting again. You will give the child a nice pretty crayon with a perfect tip & will get back 3 pieces of crayon with a broken off tip.

The fat Ultra Clean crayons might fare better, but you will get a drawn line that is 1/4 - 1/2" thick & I'm not sure where you'll find a crayon sharpener for the fat crayons. But at least if you buy them & they don't work for your quilting, you'll know they'll be put to good use. That's what grabbed my attention. I keep my "quilting crayons" in my sewing bin, but I bought them figuring if they were a bust I could pass them along to my 2 year old niece & she'd put them to good use. Of course, I haven't let her anywhere near them since I bought them 15 months ago.
