Clover makes a chalk pen that presses off, which I love . . .also like the ceramic pencils, both Sewline and Bohin make them, but I use those mostly for applique work because they distort the fabric unless you use a sandpaper board to write on.

I used the lighter pencils when I first started but too hard to remove. Used Magic eraser and the pink school erasers. I use the chalk markers and small piece of felt to wipe away.

Sliver of soap.......keep vegetable peeler near by to sharpen the soap.

I like white Chaco chalk too. Easier than sharpening a stick of chalk. But I also use washable kids markers. Crayola has lots of sets, they're cheap, easy and really wash out. Test it on a scrap first if you're unsure.

If you are tracing a pattern they have great tracing paper out.

I completed an applique quilt (blocks) on a black background. After trial and error, I found the perfect product to mark the applique pattern on a dark fabric, though I think it could be used for marking a quilting pattern. It is called Saral transfer paper. I bought it in a roll from Amazon. The nice thing about it is that it can be used over and over, so is quite economical to use. It stays on when you need it, but brushes off easily when you are finished.
