Print out some feathers that you like and trace them with your finger until you get the hang of it. Then practice drawing them with a pencil. Practice, practice, practice - that's the only secret - just remember that you can practice without sewing.

I can do feathers only from the bottom up. I just make sure to do both sides from the bottom. I draw in my spine with chalk and do the feather up the right side. I stitch down the chalk line and then start up the left side. It helps some people to think of the feather shape as 1/2 of a heart.
