Sorry to be a pest today. I’m going to start a baby quilt that has felt appliqued puppy dogs on it. The instructions call for wool felt. I don’t need much of it so I hate to buy it off the bolt. Instead, I bought felt fabric squares which are not wool. I think I know the ins and outs of washing felt and the expected shrinkage. Is there anything else I need to be aware of?

Some of the newer felt are made from polyester like fibre so don’t use an iron on them. Also wash the squares before cutting to make sure they are colourfast and don’t shrink.

I would be more apt to use flannel than felt. It will hold up better to many washings that come with baby quilts

I agree with "romanojg" that I think flannel would be a better choice than the felt. I feel that the felt would not hold up. What about fleece for the applique items?

Hmmm....didn't realize that felt didn't hold up well with washings. I suspect this baby quilt will be on display and not used but I can't be sure. Felt doesn't hold up to washings? Really? I don't have much experience working with felt.

I have found some wonderful felt on Etsy. It's not the cheap stuff.

Craft felt is acrylic and not washable. It really depends on what ( felt) you purchased. Flannel or fleece works great for soft appliqué and they both hold up very well.

I agree. A lot of wools don't feel very nice either for a baby.

You can buy as small as 1/8 of a yard off the bolt and wool felt is only 45" wide bolts. If you have a 40% or 50% coupon, it should be relatively cheap. I would not use the poly felt on something that is going to be heavily used and washed often.
