Default Felt verses batting for small wallhangings

I saw an article on someone who said she uses felt rather than batting for small wallhangings. Was going to try it on a kit I purchased which had all appliqué pieces die cut. It was a little pricey but certainly nice not to have to cut all those pieces. Finished size is about 18" x 24". What are your thoughts?

I don't see why you couldn't use felt instead if batt if it was just a wallhanging HOWEVER some felt is polyester so as long as you don't iron it, you should be fine. Some felt is not colorfast so don't get your wallhanging wet but if you used white felt, that wouldn't be a problem.

I made a table topper with felt as the backing and batting. The top was hexies and I just needle turned the top on, then hand quilted around each hexie. Came out very nice. As a wall hanging it seems as though it would hang nice.

I find that it gives no definition to the quilting stitches at all, winds up looking very flat and lifeless. Just my opinion.

I agree. It will work fine, but will be very flat.

It wouldn't handle washing often very well. I'd spend the few dollars more to make sure it'll survive washing it a few times. You just never know.

There are many different materials called *felt*
It depends on what. Felt you are considering. The acrylic craft felt kids use in school, comes in many colors, usually in 12" x 9" rectangles.can not be ironed, or washed- people use it for lots of crafts. Wool felt is washable and can be ironed. I've not seen polyester felt but would think it would be a lot like fleece, washable, iron with cool iron if needed but probably wouldn't need ironing. If its a walhanging experiment & use what you like.

What would be the advantage of using felt (of any kind)?

Thanks for your thoughts. Think I will try maybe putting a layer of thin batting to keep from looking flat. The lady who demonstrated this said the small wallhangers hung much nicer.

Felt would be very flat. I've used fleece and been happy with it. If you want more puff, then poly batting would be better thN either felt or fleece. It all depends on the finished look you want.
