What is the item you are working on. If it's a wall hanging or something that will never be washed, you are good to go. If washing the finished product is in it's future, then yes, the wool needs to be washed first.

I always wash my wools for appliqué, hot wash, with detergent, cold wash, hot dryer ( but don't over dry) steam iron if needed. That way I don't have to worry about any edges fraying. Makes the wool very easy to work with- no turned edges to deal with. If you don't prewash wool tends to fray easily
