    I think flannel would be a great choice. And YES!!! Wash and dry the flannel (several times even...) I just made burp clothes for my daughter (new grandson coming any day now !!) and was SHOCKED at how much the flannel shrunk. I cut 1 yard plus pieces to wash and was shocked at how much less than a yard I was left with...

    Thanks so much for your responses! I think I'll use the flannel but I want to check out the battings suggested also. I agree too with the idea of following the seam lines instead SID. That would look much nicer I think.
    Oh and thanks a million for the advice to wash the flannel first!!! I never would have thought to do that!
