I think flannel would be a great choice. And YES!!! Wash and dry the flannel (several times even...) I just made burp clothes for my daughter (new grandson coming any day now !!) and was SHOCKED at how much the flannel shrunk. I cut 1 yard plus pieces to wash and was shocked at how much less than a yard I was left with...

I think flannel would be a fine choice! I have been making a lot of quilts lately with flannel as batting. They are less bulky when quilting and have a really nice weight to them when finished. An added bonus is that plain old white or off-white flannel is much less expensive than traditional batting (such as warm and white or warm and natural). I do wash and dry (high heat) the flannel before using it as it shrinks quite a bit.
Oh and thanks a million for the advice to wash the flannel first!!! I never would have thought to do that!
