I am flying to Portland, OR for the "Quilt-Knit-Stich" conference and will be taking a class that requires that I have a rotary cutter.

In order for me to bring a rotary cutter I will have to check a bag, which I hadn't planned on doing and that will cost me an extra $50 ($25 each way!).

I know it seems a little insignificant, but I spent so much time shopping for the best airfare to get to Portland that I hate to spend $50 on checking a bag just for a rotary cutter.

Looking at the class description I think I might be able to get away with just using a scissors, but I hate to come unprepared to a class and to "mooch" off my neighbors.

I thought about mailing a rotary cutter to my hotel, but I don't trust that they will hold it for me.

So, my options are buying a blade while in Oregon, preferably a cheap one. Can anyone familiar with Portland recommend some place where I can pick up a blade on the cheap? One that I wouldn't feel bad about throwing away while I am there? The conference is at the Oregon Convention Center and I am staying at a hotel near the airport. I will be doing intensive shopping around the area, especially the crafting hotspots, right before taking the class.

I know this isn't the most dire situation, but it is irking me! Your help is appreciated!

Even in you end up getting a cheap cutter from walmart it will be far less than $50.

The best place for shopping would be Fabric Depot, and they sell blades. I'm going to be there first thing on Thursday, the first day of QKS. If you don't mind a Harbor Freight blade (that's what I use), I'll bring you one.

I just bought a pack of 5 Olfa 45mm replacement blades on eBay for $14. While browsing saw some 45mm Olfa cutters (new with retractable blade) for around $15 including shipping. A lot less than $50!!

If you ship it priority mail, the usps small flat rate box ships for around $6.00

Can you call the hotel to see if that would work?

It shouldn't be a problem if you keep it in the package from the store with extra blades. you could store it with the other items you're taking. Should be able to put in your carryon. Scissors would be a problem more so than rotary cutter and blades. Just don't take them out of the package til you get there or purchase them there.

Or, go ahead and buy a nice one there and then, mail it home and you won't have to worry if the hotel will hold it for you. I like to have extra cutters in case they hide on me

I agree that this is the way to do it! If you mail it back home, the total cost both ways will still be under $15.

I agree with most that just buy a new one there and mail it back unless you are like me with a hole collection of them. I would check with the TSA guidelines or call you carrier. I know they have lessen the restriction on airliners. Hope you have fun !!
