First attempt at placemats, what's easiest? Batting or double fusible interfacing?

When using Warm and Natural they do pucker a little when washed, I take mine out damp and smooth them flat. But I usually do stitching like a grid because I really don't want them to go lumpy.
For placemats I prefer to use Needlepunch but don't always have any on hand.

Thinking I will do a couple with the deco bond and a couple with W&N and do a grid topstitch. I will be putting two placemats with with a coordinating centerpiece. I do have some W&N that I am reusing that has been washed and dried so maybe shrinkage and puckering will be minimal.
Thanks for everyone their help and input. I have my indoor projects lined up for a hot week end. JB

Watched several Youtube videos, have more questions than answers now. These would be for kids so I would like to keep them as flat as possible, using wholecloth. Use the birthing method? What do I do for topstitching if I use the birthing method. Not wanting to bind.
