Quilt-Till-U-Wilt

I like my first quilt better then any I've made. It was made in a quilt class and I hand quilted it. I was amazed how well it turned out.

I love my first quilt. I have definitely improved, but I was really proud of that quilt at the time. It was fun and started me on this journey.

I don't think anyone's first quilt is destined to be their worst, any more than their first pot roast will be their worst. I DO think your SIL needs to find someone besides those quilt shop instructors to learn from or she's apt to wind up never finding the joy in quilting. Sounds like they've gone way beyond being 'quilt police' right into being 'quilt gestapo'...ripping one seam 30 times, really??! That's SO wrong.

My first quilt is not as technically good as later quilts but it is still my favourite. It started me off on my incredible quilting journey and will be treasured for that alone!

Oh.. my first quilts ( pre - rotary cutter) , I wish I could reclaim from those I gave them to. Not that I want to keep them and treasure them... I wish now.. no one to have any evidence that I made them. .. One hangs at my Moms house and everytime I see it I want to take it down. I have even made replacements.. but she won't take it down. last time I was there I even offered cash! then fabric.. and still it hangs there.

Each new technique seems to be a first for me! I get better the next time. Sewing straight is always a challenge.

I have to say mine wasn't too bad. But I did use inexpensive fabric that now I would never buy in a million years. Also my first is still just a top that I felt guilty for not quilting until I found out most people don't quilt their first. I like to look at it from time to time and see how far I've come in skills, fabric quality, and pattern choice.

My DIL is sewing her first quilt. Some she does at home and some she does here. She sews and I get time with my 2 grand daughters. Her quilt top is wonderful. Beautiful colors, great stitching, and borders. Like the saying goes, quilting is a journey, not about absolute perfection. When I sew clothing, no one looks for errors, but on quilts so many people will check. When I check a quilt I look at a new technique, pattern, or something I want to learn. Some people only want to look to be critical, none of them in my life. I look at a quilt and say "WOW" that is great. Time and love, that is what is important.

My first was and is my best. I did not know all the techniques and rules so I just did it. Then spent ten years trying to do things other peoples' way. Now am going back to my own way and getting happier!
