    What I do to eliminate the need for a hoop is to lay my quilt out across a long table and start my tacking from the center going to the left then right from center. I generally do my tacks in zigzag arrangement (offset??). When you get to the end, flip the piece around and do the other half the same way. The quilt sandwich usually stays in place pretty well.
