    Default Flange Binding Question

I've watched a number of videos and read the tutorial here, but for the life of me I can't figure out the math.

If I want my binding to end up 2 1/4", how wide do I cut each piece?

    Thanks!

    Watson

1.25 and 1.5. 1.25 will be 1 inch after you sew the two pieces and the 1.5 inch will be 1.25 after you sew the two pieces, 1+1.25 = 2.25

Forgive my lack of clarity, but 1.25 is the main colour and 1.5 is the flange?

Also, it matters how wide you want the flange to be. A lot of combinations are possible. I am making one now, with 1.75 flange and 1.25 background.

If you can do work out the math for one, then you can figure it out for other sizes and won't be restricted to one combination.

It goes like this (for my current one):

    1.75 F + 1.25 B = 3" - .5 for the seam = 2.5 (1.5 F + 1" B left)

Pressing it in half, you get 1.25 per side.

The back side is all 1.25 F. The front is the .25 F that's left over and the 1" B, to equal 1.25.

From there, you subtract your seam allowance, to get the final numbers per side.

    charlotte, hoping this makes sense

Thank you for posting this link.......I understand! Really can’t say more except I think I will make a baby quilt this week so I can actually try and bind it with a flange, which I have always wanted to do!

I have only done a flanged binding once and I really love them however somehow I reversed the fabric and flanged the wrong one. It still looked good it just frustrated me that I messed it up. There is another in my future though, I just love the way they look.

I read somewhere - could have been on this forum - that if your fabric is not wide enough for a binding ‘flange’ it with another fabric to make it the width you want and attach it so you don’t see the flange. Hope that makes sense!
