Being a non-sewer, does that sound funny, I'm a quilter.

I would like to find a mitten pattern for my grandchildren, 5 and under.
I know this is possible, I have seen them at my local quilt shop, but for $10 a set. they are nice with a thumb that looks set into the mitten.

    thanks,
    sue

I just drew around my hand (close but not tightly) for the palm and made the top about 1/2" bigger all the way around. I eased the excess in when sewing the two together. I had my thumb sticking out when I drew around it. Not perfect but they work.

I saw this online and thought it was a pretty good tutorial, although I haven't tried it. If you do, please report back! Thanks!

years ago, when i was dressmaking, i wrote to every state aggie
department (usually attached to the state university) asking for
any sewing info or patterns they could send for free. that mitten pattern was sent by every cold-climate aggie department in the entire usa. they probably don't send out anything any more.

Timberlane Press has a wonderful pattern in multiple sizes from infant to men's X-large. It makes a double layer reversible fleece mitt and I have made hundreds of these mittens so it was well worth the $10 I spent on the pattern. It is easy to stich, can be made from fleece scraps and I make at least two dozen pairs each winter. Right now I am stitching up pair number 14! I can stitch a pair in an hour (slightly more time for the big ones) and everyone loves them.

    http://www.sewthankful.com/EasyMittensPattern.html

found them here, $6.99 and if you purchase $15 there is free shipping...
so I picked up a couple more patterns... I may learn to sew after all!

    thank you,
    sue
