I use the open toe because it helps me to see where I am going.

It sounds like a pretty general consensus, then. Clear-open-toe-spring-action-foot? Thanks a bunch, everyone! Off to order! :D

I prefer the hopping foot, open toe.

I did it! Ordered the open toe, clear plastic, springy foot. I ordered a pair of Machingers gloves to go with it. :D Now I need to get working on a quilt top so I can quilt it when they get here!! LOL Thankfully my next planned project is a bed quilt for my daughter, who is 5. So I can play with random shapes, flowers and such, and I will have lots of space to practice some stippling and meandering and the like...and she won't care at all how amateur-ish they look!

THe more visibility the foot offers, the better off you will be.

I have the Bigfoot and it is all I have ever used for FMQ. I love it!

I have a pfaff 2170. and i have found that I like the embroidery foot the best. It has a TINY little hole and I can se what I'm doing much better than even with the plastic or open toe feet.

Starting out, going where you haven't been, you need to make it as easy as possible.
I had the same thing to my Sapphire foot and the store told me that it was guaranteed and gave me a new one. Maybe you could check that out?
