What a neat idea, and it makes perfect sense (and cents) -

Ain't it great? I walk down the aisles at Lowes and I look at things like the tin mesh and think - now that would make a great pattern for FMQ - durable, easy to trace....or the pipe insulation...or rolls of sandpaper for palm sanders make GREAT applique templates - and they stick!
    uh boy

I've heard of using clips one puts on their pants when they ride a bicycle.

I tried those and had several. They never worked well for me - they slid off, moved around and didn't keep the roll tight. Plus I was using my Bernina short arm at the time for FMQ and you just can't put that much rolled material under the harp.

I have a mid arm now but even so, using the pipe insulation I find allows you to keep the area taut and manage the bulk. You do need to be sure you have a table or ironing board in front of your machine to support the quilt though.
