I saw the original thread, but didn't comment on it. My personal preference is to only use variegated thread when all the variations of color/tone show up equally on the background fabric. That said, sometimes photos don't look the same as the actual quilt due to light & shadows. Other times, it's simply a matter of personal taste.
Just about anyone who has made commissioned quilts will tell you that there was at least one quilt that they just didn't like, but that their customer was absolutely thrilled with. I have one in my mind right now. Your quilt, in my very humble opinion, is still quite attractive -- even if some of the quilting disappears into the background fabric (although, again, perhaps that only happens in the photo & not in real life). I hope you & your wife enjoy it for many years to come!
