I would take it apart to see if some wires are loose. One of my foot pedals used to shock me if I used it barefoot..didn't do that long. Opened it and loose wires! Easy fix.

If there's sparks, and a hissing sound, the electrical contact is not un-contacting when it isn't pushed down. IT'S A FIRE HAZZARD!!! UNPLUG IT WHEN NOT IN USE!!! And take it back!!!

Do not mess around with this. Return it for replacement.

I wouldn't mess around with it either, TAKE IT BACK for an exchange or refund.

    I think I just panicked. :-)

    It's settled down now.

I think it will be okay.

Unfortunately I am in All Sales Final territory here so if I want to return it I'm SOL

But it seems to be okay now. I guess I'll just have to get used to it.

    Thanks everyone.

Please, I beg you, don't accept it. It is truly a danger when there's hissing and sparks from a cord!!!! Electrocution to you or someone you love (or a pet?). It could even burn your house down when you're not using it. Rather be SOL (luck) that SOL (life).

It was in the pedal but it stopped now. I read somewhere that if they are stored sometimes they'll get something in there that burns off for a bit(some kind of ultrafine condensation-IDK)

It seems to be okay now

    I really think I just panicked. :-)

And I am unplugging it every time I walk away as a safety measure.
