I think those pretty blocks are begging for a softer red, rather a med-dark pinker shade for the 1/2" border. Then I'd use an off white, perhaps with a pale grey pattern for the 1" sashing. The corner stones of the green may not look out of place, though for myself I'd use a patterned fabric, not the check.

I don't mind the red, but there is maybe too much of it.
I made this one years ago (sorry about the quality of the picture, it predates me loading them into the computer)
The blocks were set on point with the alternating block using leftovers from the main print.
This layout may be simpler and give you generally the same look as yours, but with less red. You could make the center of the alternating block any size you want.

I agree with most that there is a bit too much red and it draws the eye away from the blocks. Maybe a thinner sashing or a less intense red?
