Oops, I also answered the wrong thread.
I think I used 3" unfinished squares for the inner part of the blocks. What you select depends on your fabric's repeat, as well as its design. The pattern I used was Stacked Posie Supreme by H.D.Designs.

I planned to use them in a doll quilt. Was going to cut the fabric 1 1/2", but the pattern in the daisies would have just disappeared, so I cut 2". I would say you would not want to go any smaller than that, as you have to stop at the halfway point & fiddle with the next inner diamond.
Was going to use these for the mug rug swap, but they are 12 inches now, and are not bound yet.
