I make a test block and if it works then cut and piece 5-10 small blocks at a time. If they are large blocks usually 1 or 2 at a time. Like Jan, I use my design wall to decide if it's big enough and color placement.

I never cut out an entire quilt simply because if I do I can guarantee I will loss the pieces. Even if I'm careful and even if I organize them. I know my weaknesses.

I always do one or two blocks at a time. I often change my mind and size. Since you are doing scrappy, it will work with whatever else you are working on at the same time.

I start with a test block, then sometimes a couple more as needed. After that, I tend to work 5-10 blocks at a time. That is a nice balance to me of time spent cutting, sewing, pressing, repeat!

I would definitely cut out the pieces for a test block first and then piece it. After that do what you like. I like to cut, so usually I'll do a lot of cutting. When I get tired of cutting and want to see some results, I'll start piecing.

since I am a controlled scrappy quilter, I would construct a few first and decide how my fabrics/colors are working together before I cut any more. Depending on how much cutting for each block or any other project I am working on simultaneously, I might just do a few star blocks at a time... If I have chosen a pattern with specific fabrics, then I cut the whole project and put them in bags labeled like my Antler's Design "Falling Stars."

I agree with feline fanatics. On a big quilt I break down each step so as not to let the step I'm working on become a "job".

I do a lot of BOM quilts, so I usually cut out one block at a time. Some quilt patterns require cutting out the whole quilt like the Labyrinth or the Carpenter Star. I think it is boring to cut out a whole quilt. I prefer cutting and sewing one block at a time. When I made the Labyrinth quilt, I had those pieces labeled and laying all over a bed until I finished it. I would have been in deep trouble if someone had needed that bed before I finished the quilt!
