Some of our family's favorite quilts are double knit tops, plain squares arranged pleasingly, backed with flannel and tied. Yes they are heavier but some of ours were not so heavy as Grandma put either flannel or light weight polyester batting in them. I slept my childhood away in an unheated attic and boy those quilts were warm!

I have a older Lady 87 that makes quilt tops and I quilt them for her. Boy was I surprised when she did one red & white knit/ polyester but w/a few adjustments I longarmed it.Her eye sight is not good but her hands work perfect. Her son(my cousins husband) said if you will quilt whatever Mom makes I will pay for all your work it has made such a difference in her .She calls him to tell him about her quilts. So don't give it away till you try it.

Yes, the quilts my grandma made were tied, and she did use poly batting in the middle. They were backed in polyester, too, and boy, those quilts are heavy. But warm, and durable.

Sometimes I think that polar fleece is our generations' version of polyester double knit, and someday our kids and grandkids will be going "Why did they think this stuff was so great?"

And once, at an outdoor event, I saw someone bring a polyester double-knit quilt to sit on that was not just squares but a lone star. That's the only one I've ever seen that was "fancy" piecing.

I think other posters are right that a ball point needle would be the kind to use.

My mom made lots of quilts with knits. They last almost forever.

I might try to put them together. I'm having fun with the prices on things and the newspaper ads on the back of the quilt pieces.(15 cents for a can of corn? how old IS that quilt square???)

Its fun seeing old adds. I ran across some in my grandma's and mom's things where the telephone numbers had only three numbers listed, and as you mentioned the prices!

Finally found time to take a picture of the sewing machine. Found out it's a Singer Model 626 made in 1966.

Now to start in on the rest of the stuff.
