    like the idea someone had of calling the machine "Auntie"

    I have always called mine by there(their:)?) model numbers: 301A, 1630, MO-634DEV, 55(currently in trouble and banished to carrying case).

    If I ever find a Singer like the one my Aunt used when she taught me to sew, I would call it "Auntie"
