I enjoy using the new poly-filament. My Pfaff Exp 3.0 has no problems, nor does my Brother. Only use it in the top thread. I set my tension a bit lower - 4.5 instead of 5 and use my usual 70/10 Schmetz mictrotex needle. Perhaps problems are avoided because I have a "straight-stitch" (small hole) plate, but I didn't have it before and no problems then either. Only thing I don't like - this poly thread is supposed to be a matte finish, but it is still shiny. Otherwise all is well.

I have used only Aurifil invisible thread with cotton thread in the bobbin. I have had no trouble with the thread; but did read here that you should not use invisible thread on quilts that will be washed by hospitals as the thread will melt in the dryer. I do not use invisible thread on quilts going to nursing homes either. I'll admit that I do not enjoy threading the needle with invisible thread; but I do enjoy sewing with it.

I have used poly. It was on one of my first quilts and it worked fine. I didn't know better and bought nylon the next time. What a nightmare. I learned my lesson.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I guess I won't be trying that. I have a quilt that is sandwiched and I tried to quilt it with mono thread. Only did one or two blocks. Will now take it out and do it with my nice cotton thread. Thanks again.

Hi...10 years ago I made two quilts while taking classes...Lovers Knot & Double Irish Chain, using monofilament thread stitch in ditch and tieing in blocks. The materials are still great, the ties are there but the monofilement thread is broken everywhere from washing. Now I don't use them as often as one might if they only had a couple quilts but as a quilter, I have many & change frequently with the weather or mood, so they are not over washed. I am so unhappy that I have never used monofilement thread again on my quilts. Kayrn

I've never tried it. But I have seen it recommended for different tasks, particularly when you don't want the thread to show. Yes, there's going to be "tension" issues. Once you get it figured out though, it should be okay.

not one of my favorites, either...although it works pretty good on doing a fake hand quilting stitch on my machine.

Sorry you had such a time...I really thought you were going to tell us you had ironed it and it melted....Better luck next time!

I never liked invisible thread either, as I always thought it looked and acted like fishing line. Than I was introduced to YLO Wonder Invisible 100% Nylon thread and I was sold. It is soft and acts like "real" thread except it is invisible. I am sold.

I've never used it because I don't like the feel of it on the quilt.
