I wouldn't zigzag it, if it were mine. There's no reason it has to be done now. Perhaps you may want to wait to do your grandmother's quilt till you feel your skills have improved. It's a beautiful quilt, you must be so pleased your grandmother made it for you!

Here's a vote for hand quilted. Grandma would not have machine quilted this. If not, it would have been tied. I hand quilted a quilt top that was a "find". Have no idea how old it is but it is now a treasure as the process is, of course, slower. I felt a connection with the one who pieced the quilt and I marveled at her accuracy and enjoyed each piece that she put into the quilt. Even as a beginner of hand quilting, Grandma would be pleased to see your attempts.

Actually, no, I don't think that FMQ is bad...it sure looks better than I could do! In fact, I think it looks rather GOOD!! I personally don't care for the zig-zag, but that's just me. I'd say, do the all-over design in FMQ like your sample. JMHO :thumbup:

I think any of the three would be great. But don't do the zig zag just because you don't think your FMQ skills aren't good enough, they look good to me! And don't think you have to hand quilt it either, I think I would be too intimidated and never start on it. This quilt will be made by her and YOU I think it is fine if it reflects that. I wouldn't feel like I had to finish it like she would. Just respect her and her work.
