I am just getting into Hand applique and was wondering if anyone has done a comparison of YLI silk 100 wt thread to Superior Threads Kimono 100 wt thread. I really like using silk thread so far (have some old 40wt spools that are wonderful but just too thick for applique). Any and all comments would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

I have only used YLI. I love it though. I would think because the two are the same weight there would probably be very little difference working with them. I know YLI is very good quality and I suspect the other one is too, although I have never heard of it, Superior threads reputation will most likely assure it.

I use Superior's Masterpiece thread it's 60/2. It's very thin, lot's of colors. They make a "donut" with 36 different colors on bobbins, it's great. I also use Mettler 60/2. They are both cotton threads.

I have a friend who has done a lot of hand applique, and she has always used YLI silk. Recently she saw the new Superior silk thread and bought several spools because she didn't have those colors. She says the threads are comparable. Don't hesitate to get either one, depending on the price, availability, and color selection.

Thanks for all the info. I'm using the Masterpiece donut bobbin thread now on a current project. It's ok but doesn't glide through the fabric like the silk does for me. However, I notice that I do get a lot more knots in the silk thread than when I use cotton thread. Strange!
