I only do hand quilting and one stitch at a time. I don't count how many per inch. I do it for pleasure because that's what I like to do.

Had to go look up "Aunt Becky". I think I am going to want one of these as on the video she makes it look so easy. Hope it is. Here you go:

I hand quilt and actually do not like the look of the tiny stitches achieved with 12 per inch. I usually try to get 5 to 6 per inch and strive for consistent length and a straight stitch for my perfection. I do, however, applaud those of you who manage to get 12 stitches on that little needle!!

Thanks for all the tips! Even though I've done hand piecing and quilting for many years every tip just might come in handy!

I have tried to hand quilt off and on for a long time and it looks terrible. I really have a problem with tying off. So - - - I have signed up for a class later this fall and hope to pick up some good tips and techniques to take the frustration out. Fall will be perfect because it will start getting cold and feel good to have a quilt in my lap. I feel that having someone show me will work much better than trying to learn from books - that's just the kind of learner I am. Show me once or explain 100 times. Wish me luck.

Who decided that the gold standard was 12?

Good thread! I love hand quilting but cannot imagine 12 stitches per inch but if that is the Gold Standard----guess I will have to keep on trying. LOL
