As a self-taught hand quilter I may not be doing things like anyone else does. One thing I do at seam intersections is take an extra stitch to 'anchor' the line of stitching. My reason for doing this is that as a child I entertained myself un-quilting the quilt on my bed! So I'm making it more difficult for this to occur.[/quote]

I've done that before! Even done a backstitch here and there on bulky seams where necessary!

I hand quilt almost everything I do. Instead of rocking the needle I do one stitch at a time over the seams. Takes some time but it works for me.

Oh Thank you, everyone, for your kind and encouraging comments! I can hardly wait to get started on this... (must attack some "life-stuff" first, though...)

    Happy Quilting everyone!!

That looks like a Bonnie Hunter pattern, right? Quiltville - gotta love it. I'm going to do hand quilting on one I've just finished piecing too, and my worry was the same as yours. I'll read through all the responses as well. Thanks for asking!!

I hand quilt everything. It may take a little more time, but if enjoy, it's worth it. I also agree to using stab stitches in really thick areas. Good Luck and show us the finished results.

Your top is lovely. Do big ol' stitches with perle cotton or something that will show. Now that we have sheets and toenail clippers we don't have to worry so much about long stitches. I think they look good on string quilts.

I haven't done any hand quilting so this may sound silly, but why can't you do some of both -- machine quilt in the ditch around the blocks and then hand stitch a meander stitch over all of it?
