    Since your question was just about the flannel as backing, you should be fine with regular handquilting thread or other thread coated in bees wax. Just be sure not to pull too tight. Jeans thread would not be necessary for a sinlge layer of flannel.

    I did a queen size Univ of Ok. quilt for my grandson. No batting,flannel top and back.
