I swear by Thread Heaven as a thread conditioner. Much better - in my opinion - than beeswax or similar. Worth the price (which is cheap to begin with I think) and lasts a really long time. Decreases tangles and makes it easier to slide through fabric/batting.

I'm presently hand quilting with a spool of Dual Duty hand quilting thread on the "new fangled" spool. Will be glad when I see the end of the spool! It tangles and knots badly. I'm reluctant to use beeswax or some treatment as I have concerns for the residue that might be left and show up in future laundering. I'm trying to use it up and go back to my supply that's on the "old fashioned" spool Honestly, I sometimes am more concerned with matching color and that may be with sewing thread, which is easy to draw through the layers of the quilt. I am not concerned with the strength of "quilting thread" as the stitches are close together and will support each other. The only place I have concern with the weight of thread is if I'm tying a quilt and I use double strand of perle cotton for that. It holds up well in laundering.
