I don't have a floor frame, I do have 2 hoops that I use sometimes when I hand quilt. I do either thread baste or pin really well. There are some smaller quilts that I have just gone to quilt with no hoop and only a handful of pins.

It's possible to hand quilt with no frames. I myself don't do as well that way, but try it, it might work for you, and if it does, you aren't out anything. If it doesn't work, buy an inexpensive hoop, it will take up MUCH less room than a frame.

I have never used a frame. I use a twenty inch lap hoop.

This is what I do also. Tried using a hoop and didn't like it at all. This is the easiest for me.

I bought one at Michaels. A 16x27 oval on a stand-- wonderful because the stand bears the weight of the quilt. Then I could just quilt while I watched TV in the evening. I'd recommend this way.

Lots of quilters don't use anything to hold (frame, hoop etc.)the quilt for hand-quilting, but they pin really well.

Is it possible to pin it good and just start?
    Thank you for your suggestions!
I always hand quilt without any sort of frame - I pin my layers together and usually start in the middle never had a problem doing it this way and most of my quilts are king size :D

I have my Great grandmother's quilt frame that can be adjusted so it's not too wide, but because of the length it takes up too much room. I only use it when I do a full size quilt because I don't have to baste it. The rest of the time I use frame that sits on my lap and swivels and for those small quilts I do baste.
