Wow - lots of different ideas here. I use a straw needle for bindings and for applique. They are fine and longer than the usual quilting needles. I don't use the finest because I can't see to thread them, so it must be the #11?

I have always used the short little sharps with a small eye because I felt like they helped me make nearly invisible stitches. You have all convinced me to try long needles. I will go buy some and see how I can do with them.

I use what ever needle feels good that day because of my arthritis. Some days a longer and thinner needle is best and on other days a shorter and thin needle is better. Usually with a large enough eye that I can pass a thread through without struggling. Then I sew like a maniac until I am done with the quilt.
