Hand work for long road trips
When you go on long road trips, do you take hand work along to do during the car ride?
If so, what do you do?
How does it come out?
Are there any pitfalls to watch out for and how did you overcome them?
I cannot crochet or knit because of tendonitis (and I miss those crafts quite a bit but.....no go!).

I do a lot of machine applique, and like to iron up the little pieces ahead of time, and cut them out. I get a lot done when I am nowhere near my sewing machine.

I always have a travel hand project ready to go. Either an English Paper Piece project or a wool appliqué. I love the EPP projects best for car travel. I prep pieces ahead of time all I need is needle, thread, small scissors and my paper basted pieces. I can get a lot sewn together. It's easy to carry, easy to pick up, put down.
Wool appliqué I usually work on in hotels, one in a while I work on them while traveling, but I need more threads generally.

We don't do long road trips much. But a couple of times I worked on sewing down the bindings around quilts I was taking as gifts to people at our destination. Good use of the time, but I sure seemed to stab myself more than normal. :0)

I used to get carsick if I didn't keep my eyes glues firmly to the horizon straight out the windshield. Still haven't tried doing any handwork while riding in a car after all these years. Maybe it's time to see if I've outgrown it. I'm pretty sure the last time I tried was when the Sinclair gas stations had those brontosaurus statutes by the pumps.....
