I think I would encourage her to use one of your machines until you're sure she really likes to sew. I also would think a 17 year old is a bit old for Hello Kitty, but even if she does like it now, how long will she really want it on her machine, when we all hope our machines last for years. I would think a small Project Runway machine would have more longevity .

I second that opinion, new Singers aren't a good choice. I used to sell them. An pre-1970 Singer would a wonderful machine.

I just gave my eight year old granddaughter a Brother XR 4040. I am a Janome owner (three of them) and I have to say I was pretty impressed with this little machine. It weighs about 11 - 12 pounds and does several (40) stitches. After spending the day with my granddaughter and making sure she could use the machine without me safely, I thought about ordering another one to take to classes or for traveling. My janome machines weigh a ton!! My granddaughter loved the machine and that day she made a pillow case and worked on her fourth quilt top.

Boy I think your getting some good advice here. I would have her sew a few projects on one of your numerous machines. Once she has completed several then maybe I'd buy her a machine. Our daughter had to make a jacket, quilt, several Halloween costumes before we bought her a machine. Now that being said there was a blouse, vest and summer dress she wasted by cutting out and never completing. Hey you could buy a Hello Kitty sticker and put in on a machine....just kidding.

I checked into one for my DGD for her birthday and found it's a great little machine. So far, this one rates at the top of the list. My DGD is 25 and still loves anything Hello Kitty.

The Hello Kitty is small and I'm guessing might be frustrating to try to do adult-size garments on. And being trendy, it won't be stylish very much long. I see a lot of ads on CL for brand new machines where the ads say something lik "bought this for my daughter who used it once and decided she didn't want to sew after all" . I think JenniePenny's thoughts are spot-on.

I have a Hello Kitty 18750. Super machine. I have had no problem with it. However, I would steer away from the lower model. It's cute, yes, but so limited. I also have a Brother CS6000i. I use both of them equally well ,maybe not depending on which project is getting more attention LOL. Out of all my machines (6 at last count) I love, love, love the Brother CS6000i, but my Hello Kitty is a close runner up.
