Has anyone made a design wall from a roll up window shade?

I used an outdoor bamboo roll up shade & covered(basted)with flannel. It is mounted under the valance on my picture window so I can roll it up when not in use but I've found that it stays down all the time cause there is always something on it. I do miss the light from the window. It makes sewing room darker than I would like.
