Ok here is a learning question...because I am too inexperienced to know the answer. What if you made another set of blocks stretching lengthwise and cut them down the middle and put half on one side of the quilt and half on the other? Is this a no NO...and it is an unwritten rule that you make a quilt so that it fits without resorting to such actions? I get that this is "your quilt so do what pleases you" and you can make a quilt that evolves as it goes along, but what are the general rules..if any?

I made a quilt long ago and did large blocks. they fit across the top of the bed and one block on each side and bottom.

I agree! You have gotten so much done and enjoyed making the stars...I would continue until it is just right!

Pieced borders will raise the quilt from ordinary to spectacular. Particularly made from fabrics in the quilt.
Why be an ordinary quilter when you can make extraordinary quilts? And there is something exceedingly luxurious about full hangovers on a bed. That doesn't sound right but quilters know what I mean

Would you totally lose the look of this with sashing? I don't know much about civil war patterns. But even a narrow sashing, maybe dark, would add size.

If your bed is 60 x 80, and you don't require a pillow tuck, you could get by with an 80" length and have 15" overhang on the end. I always make quilts to reach to the pillows and cuff the sheet over. Keeps them cleaner and there isn't a double layer of quilt near the top when you're using the bed (if that makes any sense).

It looks like a few borders and you'd be there.

    hugs,

Well, it surely is beautiful. I'd continue making stars to get the size you want.

Beautiful quilt ... you've done such a fabulous job on it, I would opt to make it bigger by making more stars. Please give us an update when you have completed the quilt. I too love the civil war reproduction fabrics and grew up in an old farmhouse in upstate New York that was the civil war era. I loved that house. Thank you for sharing your beautiful quilt.

I'm with the majority here. Im always increasing quilts, especially those that are almost big enough, to fit the bed. I think quilts displayed on a bed are the best. I would increase with extra star blocks. I have this pattern on my bucket list. By the way, love your fabric choices. I love the traditional look to this quilt.
